Second Excerpt from “Cantar del Primer Hijo”

The first encounter with the First Son in the White Walled City was reportedly very short-lived. Many people had hoped that his arrival would usher in a new era, with him taking the throne that the First Man once sat upon. However, this was a short-lived hope, as he bore his true intentions of his arrival: he needed soldiers to help him in a new war to reclaim the hellscape from the demons.

The first excursion that the First Son led had only a meager group of ten volunteers from the city. While this group of ten are now well-renowned as Saints in Torian and Warathi canon, it was still an impossibly small fellowship against a wilderness full of evil creatures of all shapes and sizes that swarmed the land at that place and time in our history.

Below is another excerpt from the first Cantar, known as the Fanfare of the Son.

Cantar del Primer Hijo
At night the banquet bells rang out a tune for the stranger
Who came in from the melancholic lands rife with danger.
But not withstanding praise and honor, he did then declare
That his visit would be brief; he laid his intentions bare.
Summoning the few bravest and the strongest of us all
He held aloft his spear and pointed beyond the White Walls
Back into the demon wilds, on his journey he’d return
And the throne that sat empty, which he was offered, he spurned.

Of the bravest and the strongest that they had to offer
Only ten of them chose to gather arms from their coffers.
In this group there were seven men, one woman and two boys
Each proven worthy by combat to be in his employ.
They were the first of us to journey, charting new courses
Honorably embarking at sunrise atop horses.
And as we watched them ride away, the women wept loudly
Turning back, they took one last look, then they rode on proudly.

Trumpets blasting and hands clapping, our fanfare rose and died
As the riders vanished from our sight, we went back inside.
And the deepening silence that then took root in our halls
Echoed soundlessly past the great and mighty city walls.
For we knew not when the fellowship would return again
The prayers we then whispered were lost in the howling wind
It was as if for one night our salvation had been gained
And our shackles had only momentarily unchained.
